Druh Ireland is a painter based in Lions Bay, a small seaside village near Vancouver, British Columbia. Her abstract art echos the environment of the Pacific Northwest - from rugged rock faces to the gritty inner city.
"Eight years ago, and after many years of work in the film industry, I found myself on an extended hiatus. I used this time off to throw myself full time into painting. This time was characterized by learning, experimentation and discovery. One big discovery was that I love painting in oils. Oil paint is so lustrous, it’s irresistible!"
Druh has a background in drawing, and her first paintings were based on realism. It wasn't long before she became determined to step away from simply recording how things look and instead try to express how she feels about them. It was a process of letting go. Her relationship with paint now is less as 2-dimensional color, and more as a rich and thick medium to dig into.
Druh's formal art education began with hundreds of hours life drawing at the Basic Inquiry Studio in Vancouver. Her style of painting is largely a result of self-directed exploration, but she has also taken classes in painting and color theory at ECIAD and Capilano University.
"At this point, I feel I have arrived at a place where my paintings successfully communicate my feelings about the world we live in, and art is now a way for me to connect with my community."
